Tell me about a time you solved an ambiguous problem.

Overview

Interviewers want to know that you’re not someone who needs to be given step-by-step instructions. Show that you know how to identify key indicators, work with the resources you have, and know when to dig deeper.

Quantify your results

Describe the results of your approach and why it was successful. Also, you can share any measurable business impacts related to your contribution.

Sample answers

Having spent most of my career in the startup space, I’ve come to love ambiguity because it’s made me resourceful. In my previous role, I led the launch of our platform in Mexico. We were pioneers in this new market, and our business was the first of its kind in the country. My mission was to bring as many businesses as possible onto the platform, but there was no set guideline on how to accomplish this. I began by doing a deep dive into the product to see how it had been launched in other markets. Then I engaged the businesses I had existing relationships with in Mexico to better understand their business models, profit and loss, and budget concerns. These inputs became the bases of my market-specific pitch, which included an FAQ to address all potential questions that business might have. I implemented the pitch and rated the success. I also analyzed the amount of time conversion would take. Because I love a challenge, I also looked at my company’s most successful launch, set our target 15% higher, and assembled the team necessary to achieve this goal. I made sure that my passion for the project translated and that they were each equipped with the pitch and insights to reach our goal. We surpassed our previous launch record by four times. My team’s metrics were on average 200% above any other market, and the project is still running successfully to this day.
